Students Show Spirit at State Cheer ContestFrom the 2/1/10 issue of The Centre Daily TimesThe 16 cheeleaders from Bishop McCort High School wore white, red and gold uniforms, and when the techno-pop mix started, each of them executed a back flip to kick off their two-and-a-half-minute routine. The performance inside the Bryce Jordan Center was part of the Universal Cheerleading Association's Keystone State Games, in which about 35 junior high and high school squads from across Pennsylvania competed.
"Most athletes get an hour, four quarters, to improve on what they're doing," said State College Area High School varsity cheerleading coach Kelly Parks. "They have two and a half minutes of their lives to give."
State College Area High School's 15-member squad competed in the medium varsity division against Bishop McCort. For State High junior Jessi Collins, the hardest part of the sport is dealing with stress that comes during practices in the week leading up to a competition
"You're just freaking out the whole time," said 17-year-old Collins. "But once you're over that, and once you're out there having a good time, it pays off."

Continued... Students Forgo Trips for CharityFrom the 1/28/10 issue of the Centre Daily Times...How many people would give up a well-deserved vacation for which they'd been saving all year in order to help others? At least 17.
That’s the number of students in LifeLink PSU, the State College Area School District’s program for 18-to 21-year-old students with special needs. The group decided to give up the vacation in the Bahamas that they began planning last year. Instead, they’re going to continue to raise money that will instead go to Haiti relief efforts.
“I just think it’s the right thing to do,” said Kevin Todd.
Todd, who as a child was adopted after a natural disaster, said it wasn’t a tough decision for him.
“We can go to the Bahamas any other time in our lives,” he said. “These people need the money.”
